Which social media management software for a small business?

Buffer, Hootsuite, Metricool, an honest comparison for a small business or freelancer, with verified prices, real limits and what no tool will ever do.

The Postorico team

The essentials

  • A social media management software schedules and publishes your posts. It does not create the content and it does not define your strategy.
  • Buffer remains the most accessible option, from $5 per channel per month; Hootsuite is powerful but expensive, $99 per month minimum; Metricool offers the best balance, with a free plan that is genuinely usable.
  • If you are starting from scratch, with no editorial line and no content ready, a tool on its own will not solve your problem.

What a software does, and what it does not

A social media management software is above all a scheduling tool. You prepare your posts in advance, you schedule them on a calendar, the tool publishes them at the chosen time. That is all.

What it changes in practice:

  • You save time by grouping creation and scheduling into a single weekly slot.
  • You keep a steady rhythm without logging into each network every morning.
  • You see your editorial calendar at a glance.

What it does not do, and this is where many business owners get caught:

  • It does not create the content. You still write your copy, prepare your visuals, come up with your ideas.
  • It does not define your strategy. Which network? What frequency? What tone? Those questions stay wide open.
  • It does not generate engagement. Replying to comments, talking with your community: that is human work.
  • It does not improve mediocre content. Automatically publishing dull posts is automating inefficiency.

Scheduling is a real gain, provided you have something to schedule.

The most widely used tools

The prices below were taken from the publishers' official pages in August 2026. They change regularly: check before you subscribe.

Buffer

Buffer is the simplest to get started with. The interface is clean, the learning curve almost nil. In under an hour, you connect your accounts and schedule your first posts.

  • Free: 3 channels, 10 scheduled posts per channel, 1 user.
  • Essentials: $5 per channel per month billed annually ($60 a year), a little more monthly. Unlimited posts, advanced analytics.
  • Team: $10 per channel per month annually, with unlimited users and an approval workflow.

For a small structure with three to five active networks, count on $15 to $25 per month on Essentials. Buffer covers Instagram, Facebook, X, LinkedIn, TikTok, Pinterest and YouTube, with discounts beyond ten channels.

Its limit: the statistics stay basic, there is no brand monitoring and no built-in comment management. It is a publishing tool, not a complete suite.

Who it is for: freelancers and small businesses who want to schedule their posts without thinking about it.

Hootsuite

Hootsuite is the historic reference. It does far more than Buffer: monitoring, comment management, advanced analytics dashboards, multiple integrations.

  • Standard: $99 per user per month annually, up to 10 social accounts.
  • Professional: $199 per user per month, unlimited accounts.
  • Advanced: $399 per user per month.
  • No free plan any more: only a 14-day trial.

That is where it hurts for a small business. Ninety-nine dollars a month is a marketing budget in its own right for a freelancer. And the price is per user: for two people, it doubles.

Its limit: it does not create content either, and its complexity discourages anyone without a marketing background. Expect several days to get to grips with it.

Who it is for: SMEs with a dedicated budget and a real need for reporting. Not the first option for a tradesperson or a local shop.

Metricool

Metricool is the rising alternative in Europe. Its strong point: a free plan that is genuinely usable.

  • Free: 1 brand, 20 scheduled posts per month, 30 days of history, analysis of 5 competitors. LinkedIn and X are excluded from this plan.
  • Starter: from 20 € per month, around 15 € billed annually. Up to 10 brands, unlimited posts, access to X, 100 competitors tracked.
  • Advanced: from 54 € per month, for teams, with content approval.

Metricool covers Instagram, Facebook, X, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, Twitch, and the Google Business Profile listing, which is a real advantage for a local shop. It is often the first place a customer discovers a business, even before its website.

Its limit: excluding LinkedIn from the free plan is a nuisance if it is your main network. And, like the others, it does not replace a strategy.

Who it is for: small and medium businesses who want a complete tool without paying the Hootsuite price. A good entry point to test things out.

The others

  • Later: visual-focused, appreciated for Instagram and TikTok. Relevant if your communication rests on imagery.
  • SocialPilot: good features-to-price ratio for small agencies managing several clients.
  • Publer: less known, solid on content recycling.

How to choose based on your real situation

You already have a strategy and content ready

This is the ideal case. You know what to publish, where, at what frequency. You are just looking to stop thinking about it every day.

Buffer or Metricool are more than enough. Start with Metricool's free plan or Buffer's Essentials, test for a month, measure the time genuinely saved, then adjust.

You are starting from scratch

No editorial line, no content in stock, no routine. A scheduling tool will fix nothing.

What you need first: defining your positioning, choosing one or two networks, not five, and setting a sustainable pace. Two posts a week beat ten in January and silence in February.

The tool comes after. Not before.

You want to delegate, not just schedule

If your goal is to stop dealing with social media altogether, no strategy, no content, no publishing, no scheduling software will do it. These are two different jobs: scheduling a post and writing it.

Your options then are a freelancer, an agency, or a service that combines human framing and production. The price gap between those three routes is considerable, and that is the subject of another article.

What no tool will ever replace

Deciding on your positioning. What do you speak up about? What is your angle? These choices shape everything else.

Writing something that resonates. A post that works speaks to a real person about a real problem. That requires knowing your audience, time, and often a way with words.

Keeping the relationship with your community. Replying, engaging, handling private messages: not automatable without losing the very reason you publish.

Interpreting the numbers. The tools give plenty of them. Understanding why a post worked and drawing a conclusion for the next one is a skill.

For a small structure with no marketing team, managing social media seriously means three to five hours a week, even with the best tool in the world. That is the figure to keep in mind before subscribing to anything.

What to remember

  • A scheduling software is useful if, and only if, you already have content and a direction.
  • Buffer is the simplest and cheapest to start with. Metricool offers the best balance, with a usable free plan. Hootsuite makes sense with a budget and advanced needs.
  • If you are looking to delegate the whole thing, a tool on its own will not be enough.

That is precisely the gap Postorico aims to fill: the brand framing is done by humans, tone, editorial line, art direction, then the platform produces the proposals in that voice, schedules them and publishes them once you have validated them. It is not the same spend as a scheduling tool at 20 € per month, and it is not the same work either.

Frequently asked questions

Can a software replace a community manager? No. It automates the publishing of content you have prepared. It replaces neither strategic thinking, nor writing, nor managing interactions. A well-chosen tool saves time, but you need someone behind it.

What is the best alternative to Buffer or Hootsuite for a small structure? Metricool, in most cases in Europe: a functional free plan, reasonable prices, and support for the Google Business Profile listing on top of the classic networks. Later is preferable if your communication is very visual.

How long does it take to get to grips with these tools? Buffer: under an hour for the basics. Metricool: half a day to cover it. Hootsuite: several days, and real training to make use of the dashboards. For a small business, simplicity often matters more than a wealth of features.
